Yılmaz Güney festival set to embrace diverse fields of arts

Next year's Yılmaz Güney Culture and Art Festival, one of the newest additions to Turkey's crowded circuit of festivals, will mark its second edition with a wide-ranging scope that embraces works in five separate fields of the arts, the event's organizers announced on Friday.

The festival's second edition will be accepting submissions until Jan. 15, 2012, which will also mark the festival's opening date. Submissions in the fields of cinema (including shorts, features and documentaries), short stories, poetry, cartoons and photography are eligible.

A joint effort between the İstanbul-based Yılmaz Güney Foundation and the cultural center Yüz Çiçek Açsın (May a Hundred Flowers Bloom), the festival will run in several provinces across Turkey for two months, until March 15, with a majority of its events in İstanbul. The complete program, including cities, venues and the full calendar, will be announced on Jan. 1, according to a report by the Anatolia news agency. The festival will also distribute a number of non-monetary awards in each of its five fields after it wraps up, with a ceremony to be held on March 31, Anatolia said.

The festival will also present cinema buffs with an opportunity to see an 11-piece selection of the late Güney's most notable films in a special program courtesy of the Yılmaz Güney Foundation, the report added.
